I get upset whenever I hear of people saying, You should just get over it; forget about it and get on with your life. Otherwise, youre seen as weak, so you dont deserve their understanding or compassion. I promise you, there isnt a single one of us who have developed PTSD now or will in the future who wouldnt love to just get over it but unfortunately that isnt always possible. One thing I know with complete certainty is that absolutely no one who develops PTSD whether it is complex or otherwise wants to remain a prisoner of this debilitating mental illness. Mental health is a multi-billion dollar industry, yet one of the biggest drawbacks to reaching out for help is the stigma attached to mental illness. PTSD doesn't conjure up out of thin air, theres a story behind it. The person, who developed PTSD, has witnessed and/or been exposed to an unbearable traumatic experience that has affected them deeply. Their lives will never be the same; they cant take back the experience. For this reason, I have made the conscious decision to write this book. To use my story as an example to raise awareness about Complex-PTSD and to help give others who have developed it a voice in their darkness. It is to let others dealing with PTSD and/or ongoing violence know they are not alone and to show support while they are on their healing journey. While PTSD can be triggered by a short-lived trauma, Complex-PTSD, also known as Lifetime-PTSD, or complex trauma occurs after long-term, chronic, repeated trauma. My name is TRU and there was a time that Complex-PTSD was an every day part of my life. It was a constant companion and reminder of how I survived as a child subsisting in a violent home environment. Home wasnt a comforting sanctuary for me; it was a place where my personal boundaries were repeatedly violated. I was a victim of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and family violence. Eventually as an adult the day came when my survival techniques werent enough and I was triggered by a flashback of a suppressed memory. I was tipped over the edge to where I could no longer pretend to myself that I had control over my life. Everything started spiraling out of control. That was one of the darkest times of my life. Going over the edge, is what caused me to finally admit that I could no longer handle what was happening to me alone. I desperately needed help. It caused me to reach out and get the professional help I needed and put me on the road to healing. I am, fortunately, one of the lucky ones. I found my way to recovery. Throughout the book attention has been paid to include an educational component. Here I share the impact of Complex-PTSD. I bring together the details of my story with my educational background in social service work and victimology as well as my victim services experience in crisis intervention, responding to victimization, and supportive interventions. This book has been written for those that can benefit from it most: those who have developed PTSD/C-PTSD, their friends and loved ones, those in the military, front-line workers, 911 dispatchers, distress centre workers, students, teachers, and the mainstream public; anyone who would like to be better informed.
